Hi.

I’m Richard Edwards.

My focus in law is helping clients navigate legal issues so they can focus on what they do best.

I have assisted clients with:

  • Businesses purchases and sales
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Share purchase and share sale transactions
  • Shareholder Agreements and Unitholder Agreements
  • Business succession planning and implementation
  • Insurance funded buy-sell arrangements in businesses succession
  • Front-end employment advice, covering employment agreements, contractor-vs-employee issues, award interpretation and coverage, state-vs-national system
  • Estate planning, incorporating wills, trust succession, business succession, EPAs, EPGs and AHDs
  • Licensing agreements and arrangements
  • Terms of use / terms of trade
  • Website suites with terms of use, retail sales platforms and privacy
  • Construction subcontract advice

My early career involved enough litigation to turn me away from it. Defamation proceedings in the Supreme Court. Arguing with and suing Telstra and Optus over their franchise networks. He prefers working with people when they’re exploring opportunities and growth, rather than at ten paces in the courts, armed with Counsel.

I lived in Melbourne for seven years and, in that time, ran Whites Legal which focussed on bars, restaurants, cafes and hospitality businesses. I have been recognised for his work as a finalist in National and Victorian law awards, interviews with leading industry publications and writing for The Australian on the laws in hospitality.

With my young daughter, Ruby, in tow, I moved back to Perth and ran the commercial practice at Pragma, one of the fastest growing firms in Australia, becoming Head of Commercial in 2019. Tom came along too.

In 2021, I joined Balfour Meagher to further complement the breadth and depth of commercial expertise.

Richard has been accused of being ‘disgustingly cheerful’, and you’ll find it infectious.

You can find Richard on weekends chasing his children around the park, or riding his bike, often along the coast, whilst (shudder) wearing lycra.
